The 2001 Original

- Shipped one million copies in Japan within two months — a first for the PS2 — and roughly 2.5 million worldwide.
- Series lore: the Issen counter-attack was born from a bug — enemies froze in the fog, and the timing to strike them became the core mechanic.

The 2019 Remaster — Worth It?
The remaster (January 15, 2019) is the only version sold today. It is a light touch: widescreen support, analog movement, and a fresh audio track, but the visuals are only mildly upgraded and the lip-sync issues of the original remain. It also does not include the Genma Onimusha content. At $19.99 it is still the easiest legal way to play the original in 2026.
Legacy & Reception
Warlords was a critical hit at launch — praised for its visuals, orchestral score and CG cinematics, criticised for its short length and simple puzzles. Its commercial success funded the PS2 trilogy, and its soul-absorbing gauntlet and Issen counter remain the DNA of Way of the Sword.
